How to submit your story to Project QueerFlight

Requirements

  • You identify as a member of the Queer community, or you are part of a family that chose to relocate to protect a child based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.

  • You moved from the United States and resettled in another country.

  • Your story must be written in the first person.

  • Stories may only be submitted by the individual or family whose experience is being shared.

  • There is no minimum amount of time that must have passed between your resettlement and the submission of your story.

Definition of Queer

For this project, "Queer" includes anyone whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth and/or whose sexual orientation is not heterosexual.

Submission:

Please write your story in the first person about your experience leaving the United States. You are welcome to include anything you feel is important to your journey. Some topics you may wish to discuss include:

  • A little about yourself and your family, if applicable

  • What part of the United States you moved from

  • How your friends and family reacted to your decision

  • How you chose the country you moved to and what that process was like

  • What the period leading up to your move was like, including any unexpected challenges

  • What resettlement has been like so far

  • Things that were easier or more difficult than you expected

  • Lessons you have learned from the moment you decided to move through the present day

There is no right or wrong way to tell your story. We encourage you to share as much or as little detail as feels comfortable.

You are also welcome to submit photographs from your journey to be included alongside your story.

Please use the submission form on the Story Submission tab to share your story. The information requested on the form helps Project QueerFlight learn more about you and your experience. Information provided in the submission form will not be shared with any individuals or organizations outside of Project QueerFlight. Only your written story and any photographs you choose to submit will be shared on the website or through Project QueerFlight's social media channels.

Once your story has been received and published on the website, you will be sent a link so you can read it, share it with friends and family, and help others who may be considering a similar journey.
